Natal chart calculator: your birth chart, the Vedic way
A natal chart is a snapshot of the sky from the place you were born, at the minute you were born. It shows the rising sign, the twelve houses, and the sign, degree and nakshatra of the Sun, the Moon and each planet. Astro21 calculates it from your birth date, time and place and shows it as a North Indian or South Indian chart.
Vedic, sidereal positions
Astro21 uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard in Indian astrology. If you have seen a Western chart before, many of your planets may appear one sign earlier here: that is the difference between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs, not an error.
What you can read from it
- The Lagna and the lord of each house.
- The Moon’s nakshatra and pada, which set the Vimshottari dasha periods.
- Yogas, and the sixteen divisional charts for specific areas of life.
In Indian astrology the natal chart is your Kundli. To compare two charts for marriage, use the Kundli Milan calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is a natal chart?
A natal chart, or birth chart, maps where the Sun, the Moon, the planets and the rising sign (Lagna) were at the moment and place of your birth. In Vedic astrology it is called the Kundli or Janam Kundli.
Is a natal chart the same as a Kundli?
Both are birth charts. Western astrology usually uses the tropical zodiac, which follows the seasons; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which follows the stars. Today the two differ by about 24 degrees, so a planet can fall in a different sign. Astro21 calculates sidereal (Vedic) charts with the Lahiri ayanamsa; it does not draw Western tropical charts.
Why does the birth time matter so much?
The rising sign passes through all twelve signs in about a day, roughly one sign every two hours, so a few minutes can change the Lagna and with it every house in the chart.
