Hora today: live planetary hours

How hora is calculated

A hora is one of 24 planetary hours in the Vedic day, which runs from one sunrise to the next. The time from sunrise to sunset is divided into 12 equal day horas, and the time from sunset to the next sunrise into 12 equal night horas. Because day and night change length through the year, so do the horas: in Delhi in late October a day hora lasts about 56 minutes and a night hora about 64.

The first hora after sunrise belongs to the lord of the weekday: the Sun on Sunday, the Moon on Monday, Mars on Tuesday, Mercury on Wednesday, Jupiter on Thursday, Venus on Friday and Saturn on Saturday. Each following hora goes to the next planet in the order Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, as the Surya Siddhanta describes. After 24 horas the cycle arrives at the next day's lord, which is how the weekday names follow one another.

Hora times depend on where you are, because sunrise does. The same moment can fall in different horas in Delhi, Dubai and London. This page uses your current city, and sunrise is taken as the moment the Sun's upper edge meets the horizon, allowing for atmospheric refraction, the convention most modern panchangs follow. Some panchangs use the centre of the Sun's disc instead, which can shift the times by a few minutes.

Tradition links each planet's hora with particular kinds of work, such as Mercury with study or Jupiter with financial dealings. These are traditional associations, shown here as a guide to timing, not as promises of results.
